Just as randomness is a fundamental fact of reality, so is trending. Essentially, each trend is a break-down in randomness. How long do breakdowns last? Unknown, but an enduring trend can encompass ages, eras, and epochs. Will there be more negative trends (unipolarity, interference, and war) or positive ones (great power cooperation and pacific settlement of disputes)? Time will tell.

The Ron Paul approach, or variations of isolationism, it seems to me are internally consistent. If you're isolationist, you believe that US internationalism actually hurts the US and is playing a major role in its decline.

On the other hand, this administration's perhaps intentionally scattershot policies so far don't seem to have any coherence, again, perhaps intentionally. If you're going to be transactional, why not keep and use the soft power weapon that has served the US superbly for decades?
